Biography

Born the seventh son of 12 children in C.B., Doug Fraser was surrounded by the arts in the form of Celtic folklore, music, traditional step dance and the Gaelic language. However, it was sketching where his artistic talent was first discovered. He was 15 or so when an older sibling gave him a paint set and although the paint set did not include a paintbrush it did not seem to matter. Doug Fraser found his passion.

Doug Fraser paints with oil on canvas. Living in Cape Breton he is constantly surrounded by the inspiration of rural life in its simplicity, which is often his subject matter. He enjoys capturing the spirit of life interacting with his surroundings. His use of light, color and subject matter creates stories with emotion.

Recently a collector stated “…(Doug’s art) calls out to the souls of the audience because he is indeed able to capture a feeling in what he paints……I find myself able to “be in” almost any of Doug’s paintings, I think this is a tremendous and rare artistic achievement.”

Frank Macdonald, Publisher of the Inverness Oran wrote….Fraser’s work, although steeped in realism has frequently possessed tiny distortions into the surreal. Fraser explains that considering the context of the landscape found in Cape Breton, from where I find my inspiration, and the culture from which my imagination emerged, it is just the way I view my surroundings. Fraser’s primary pursuit is to paint the color of light.

As a self-taught artist Doug Fraser has spent a great deal of the past 30 years reading art literature, visiting Museums, Galleries and of course painting. In the spring of 2007 Doug Fraser opened the Doug Fraser Art Studio and Gallery located on a Mountain overlooking the Northumberland Strait in Inverness. He has been working as a professional artist for ten years now.

Doug Fraser’s work can be found in both corporate and private collections throughout North America and Europe.

On a recent lecture tour at Bowling Green State University, instructor Stephanie Rozene wrote this about Doug Fraser.

I have been exposed to and seen many artist’s work. I believe that Mr. Fraser’s art is not only exquisitely crafted but is poignant and meaningful in its intent.…he is a singularly gifted artist who has truly mastered the skill of seeing and recording while incorporating emotion….
